Commissioner, John Cahill, from Albany was joined by Channel 13 last Thursday to promote Belleayre’s new “Dot Nebel Trail” a 4000-foot-plus sculpted premier ‘double black diamond’ trail with a 1000 foot vertical drop. Named after Belleayre’s own Olympian, Dot was a pioneering woman who designed Belleayre’s first trails back in 1949, and then ran Belleayre’s ski school for many years. The trail begins at Belleayre’s 3,429 foot summit- the highest ski able peak in the Catskills. Dot Nebel, now 96 and in frail health, arrived at Belleayre in good spirits accompanied by her close friends. She enjoyed a ride up the new trail by snowcat groomers and viewed the beautiful sites and slope along with the ski patrol, Ski School, Superintendent Dick Clark, and Assistant Superintendent Tony Lanza. Smiling, Ms. Nebel expressed her wish to stand on her cross country skis once again! Afterwards escorted back to the main lodge, Dot and her friends sat around the lodge’s warm and cozy fireplace before heading back home later that day.

A plaque was given to Lewi Grocholl, for his participation in the top Belleayre trails creation. Lewi is the only employee at Belleayre shaping the trails as a bulldozer operator since the beginning and all the way through completion.
